The victim is a journalist, politician, parliamentarian, and former potential presidential candidate. The Matariya Misdemeanor Court had issued a one-year prison sentence last February, and a EGP 20,000 fine to suspend the sentence pending an appeal. The sentence also included a five-year ban on him from running in parliamentary elections.
The victim is serving his sentence in the case known in the media as the "Parallel Popular Powers of Attorney" case, registered as No. 16336 of 2023 Matariya Misdemeanor.
Update April 27, 2025: The victim was brought before the Supreme State Security Prosecution while in custody and serving his sentence. He was investigated in connection with two cases, No. 2468 of 2023 and No. 2635 of 2023.
The victim was charged with inciting the commission of a terrorist act using force, violence, and intimidation with the intent of disturbing public order, endangering public safety, and obstructing the implementation of laws and regulations. He was also charged with inciting participation in a gathering of more than five people with the intent of preventing and obstructing the implementation of laws and influencing public authorities in the exercise of their duties. This would have endangered public safety if the participants carried weapons.
The prosecution decided on the same day to release him and return him to prison to complete the execution of the sentence issued against him.
