The victim was first arrested on March 18, 2015, on charges stemming from his activities in a Zamalek football club supporters' group.

He faced charges and trials in more than 13 cases across criminal, military, and misdemeanor courts, receiving acquittals in most instances. However, in September 2017, he was sentenced to seven years in prison.

In April 2026, the Supreme State Security Prosecution ordered his release pending trial in Case No. 910 of 2021. He was released on April 16, but was arrested again just hours after arriving home when a number of relatives and friends gathered to welcome him. He was subsequently charged with new offenses, including: assembly, protesting, possession of fireworks, use of force, blocking a road, endangering lives and property, and disturbing public order.
