Dr. Abdel Moneim Aboul Fotouh, head of the “Strong Egypt” party, was arrested on February 14, 2018 from his home, about a month and a half before the 2018 presidential elections, during which the current president, Abdel Fattah El-Sisi won, and was brought before the Supreme State Security Prosecution. The one that investigated him in Case No. 441 of 2018, the Supreme State Security.
The Supreme State Security Prosecution charged the head of “Masr Elkaweya” party, including “joining a group established contrary to the provisions of the law and spreading false news inside and outside Egypt that harms the country’s interests.” In August 2021, the Supreme State Security Prosecution referred Aboul Fotouh and others to Criminal Court after more than 3 and a half years of pretrial detention.
In May 2022, the Emergency State Security Criminal Court ruled that Aboul Fotouh be sentenced to 15 years in prison and placed on terrorism lists.
In December 2022, Ahmed Abu El-Ela, a member of the defense team for Dr. Abdel Moneim Aboul Fotouh, said that he suffers from problems in the cell related to the extreme cold and the absence of basics to protect him from the cold, especially with his advanced age, in addition to his lack of adequate health care in conjunction with The severe deterioration of his health.
Update/September 2024: Ahmed, the son of Dr. Abdel Moneim Abu Al-Futouh, announced that the latter refused to attend his family’s visit, objecting to the visit in the glass cabin and demanding that it be a normal visit.
