He was arrested on 10 September 2017 from Cairo Airport before traveling to Geneva, Switzerland on a visit to the United Nations. After two years in pretrial detention, on October 14, 2019, the Criminal Court acquitted Ibrahim Metwally of the charges against him and ordered his release. On November 5, 2019, he was charged in a new case on charges similar to the charges in the first case. Recently, on August 26, 2020, the court ruled his innocence, but he was charged in a new case on September 6, 2020. Among the cases in which he was charged are Case No. 786 of 2020 State Security, and No. 1470 of 2019 State Security.
