He was arrested from his home on July 3, 2013. He was accused of more than one case, including insulting the judiciary. He was sentenced in his presence to a 7-year strict prison sentence in the case of forgery of his mother's nationality, and a year in prison for insulting the judiciary. On May 4, 2019, he was sentenced to 5 years in prison in the case known in the media as the siege of Nasr City Court. He has been subjected to deliberate medical neglect since his arrest, poor conditions of detention and solitary confinement.
