He was arrested on 16-02-2018 from the top of the The circular bridge and forcibly disappeared for 5 days. He was transferred to Tora maximum security prison (Al-Aqrab). He was accused in Case 441 of 2018, restricting the security of his country, by filming a press interview with Hisham Genena, spreading false news, and joining a banned group. It is reported that Moataz has engaged in various hunger strikes to protest the ban on visiting him since his arrest until now. He suffers from poor conditions of detention and medical negligence, and he is under pretrial detention in Tora High Security Prison (Al-Aqrab).
